A Clinton Hill & Bed-Stuy Community Aid Fund

“Service is not about fixing or helping—it’s about connection. It is a relationship between equals, where wholeness meets wholeness, and gratitude flows both ways. We serve not because life is broken, but because it is holy.”

— Rachel Naomi Remen, author of Kitchen Table Wisdom & My Grandfather’s Blessings

At Prema Hummingbirds, we work hand-in-hand with our neighbors to co-create solutions that reflect our shared strengths and meet our collective needs. Together, we build projects that celebrate connection, foster mutual respect, and grow a network of support that uplifts us all.

Who We Are

Prema Hummingbirds is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit arm of Prema Yoga Brooklyn. Inspired by the delicate yet purposeful nature of hummingbirds, we are committed to nurturing our community with care and compassion, responding thoughtfully to where help is needed most.

Our mutual aid fund focuses on food security, eldercare, family assistance, community connection, animal welfare, and so much more.

We work with our community to create sustainable efforts that strengthen and support everyone involved.

At Prema Hummingbirds, we don’t see service as an act of charity but as a shared responsibility. By coming together, we create a community that values each person’s contributions, experiences, and dignity.

We Serve The Clinton Hill & Bed-Stuy Community

Our Fulton studio, nestled at the intersection of Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy, will serve as the operational hub for the fund. At the core of our initiative lies a commitment to fostering genuine connection and building trust with every individual who seeks service.

Though we’re a small fund with limited resources, our focus is on supporting individuals and families in the neighborhoods closest to our studio—where we can work together to make the biggest difference.

Why We’re Here

Yoga teaches us the importance of nurturing relationships and recognizing our interconnectedness. Through our mutual aid efforts, we collaborate with community members to co-design initiatives that enhance our collective well-being, acknowledging that our health and dignity are shared responsibilities.

Imagine if every neighborhood took a step beyond its confines—what if we actively engaged with those within our immediate radius? In doing so, we would not only serve one another but also cultivate relationships that bring forth the highest expressions of ourselves and our shared humanity. Our endeavor aims to bridge the chasm between an insular, self-serving existence and a world that flourishes through the beauty of connection, community, and a humble presence that fulfills each other’s needs.

Through the Prema Hummingbirds Mutual Aid initiative, we aspire to forge dedicated partnerships between volunteers and households within our community. Our inaugural project focused on enhancing food security by facilitating the distribution of monthly groceries tailored to each family's unique preferences. As we continue to nurture these relationships, our avenues of support have expanded to include companionship for the elderly, comprehensive family assistance, community gatherings, animal welfare, and beyond. Together, we can illuminate a path toward a more compassionate and interconnected world.
